In 1 John 4: 7-12 John writes about how God has revealed the kind of love that we could never in a million years imagine. It’s not that we love God. It’s not surprising that we should love God. God is everything we could ever want. He is beauty and goodness. He is lovely and lovable. He holds every gift that every human being could ever desire. Who could not love God? It’s like kids love Santa Claus because he brings them presents. That’s obvious. That’s easy. That’s expected.
“This is love,” John says, “not that we loved God but that he loved us.”
God loved us not because he needed us; not because he could get something out of us; not because we impressed him. God loved us with another kind of love. God loved us with a love that is out of all proportion to its object. God loved us because it is the nature of God to love. God is love!
