In Luke 18, Jesus tells the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector. In comparing the prayers of these two men, we gain an understanding of authentic righteousness—a heart that genuinely loves God and loves people.
Often superiority or self-righteousness is difficult for human beings to recognize in themselves. Jesus attacks these issues harder than anything else because he knows the potential damage that can be done. It’s the difference between being blind, unloving, and far away from God or having a humility that keeps us right at the heart of God’s life.
